Nichi Bei Times to Fold, May Come Back as a Nonprofit

Harry Mok - August 20, 2009

nichi_bei_times.jpgThe Nichi Bei Times, which has been covering the Northern California Japanese American community for 63 years, will cease publication [1] after its Sept. 10 issue.

Earlier this month, the Nichi Bei Times board of directors voted to cease operations [2] for the San Francisco-based publication. Nichi Bei Times Vice President and English Edition Editor Kenji Taguma has formed the Nichi Bei Foundation [3] with a new board of directors [4] and hopes to continue publishing [5] the paper as a nonprofit.

The media is taking a beating from the recession and ethnic media isn't immune. We at Hyphen welcome the Nichi Bei Foundation to the nonprofit struggle to keep independent, community media alive.
