Best of Slant: Vol. 1

Curated by Melissa Hung

This collection of Asian American short films is the best of the best from Slant: Bold Asian American Images, a film festival sponsored by indie arts organization the Aurora Picture Show and curated by Hyphen's own founding editor, Melissa Hung. Selected from seven years of entries from the Houston-based festival, the DVD includes How to Do the Asian Squat (2002) by Daniel Hsia and my personal favorite, Maritess vs the Superfriends (2002) by Dino lgnacio. These gems span in genre from animation like Ignacio's piece to more experimental films, such as I Pie (A Love Story) (2001) by Canadian Nobu Adilman. Other films include Karen Lum's Slip of the Tongue (2005) and Kip Fulbeck's Lilo & Me (2003). It's nice to have this DVD around to entertain your younger or out-of-town friends. They might think you are weird or cool-or both. But at least you got them thinking about Asian American issues and just what quirky, great films we can make. Who knows, it just might inspire those from a younger generation to go and make their own.
