Black Kids: Darlings of the Music Blog World

August 29, 2007

What's in a name though? In the end it's all about the music, and Black Kids four-song EP has been praised on several popular music blogs. Apparently they stole the show at Athens Popfest earlier this month, and since then have been appearing on music blogs left and right. Each song off their EP has catchy and semi-familiar moments, some of Pulp-like wryness and others of the Cure-ish desperation. richsrantroom.com describes frontman Reggie Youngblood as having "an almost Morrissey-esque androgynously coy sex appeal." Indeed, there is a 80s Euro-pop feel to Black Kids.

"Hit the Heartbreaks" is my current favorite, with "I've Underestimated My Charm (Again)" a close second. Other blogs recommend "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You," which is the EP's catchiest track. Black Kids have some upcoming shows in Jacksonville, so if you're in Florida, definitely check them out if you can. Until they make their way to the West Coast, I'm putting their EP on repeat.

Visit their myspace page for more info and to download all four songs off their EP.

there name should Rich Kids.its money behind the band not unique awe inspiring talent.
Thanks for refering to my interview with the Black Kids. However, the name of the website (in case anyone else wants to check it out) is actually www.richsrantroom.comgo check it out everyone--the Black Kids are destined for stardom and Reggie is as compelling in the Q&A as he is on stage.
Thanks, Rich. Sorry for the error, it's been corrected.I agree, Black Kids are gonna blow up. It's inevitable.
someone that is "half black, half filipino" is still a "whole black person". can we please allow the mixed folk to be whole people too? thanks...
I see what you're saying. That was poor phrasing on my part. I didn't mean to imply that they as people were any less "whole." I was referencing the user's comment on The Yellow Stereo about "crunching the numbers" and only coming up with "one black kid." I should have made that more clear. But I agree -- saying that two people who are half black make up "one black kid," or a "whole black person" isn't the right way to describe it. Apologies to anyone i offended.
i could see many black people being a bit ticked off at the rather smarmy comment about Jesse Jackson in the interview and i wonder how many would shrug off the "depends on your concept of black kids" if they were named "Chinese kids" or "Vietnamese Kids" or if some Black group named themselves "white kids".Just a thought.
the black kids obviously named themselves this to get attention, because god knows this music isnt going to do it for them, alone. its above average bad and proves that quite a large number of people definitely believe what they read and believe the hype. listen to the papercuts or margot and the nuclear so and so's or seabear and then tell me that this band has talent. come the fuck on.
I have seen postings of them on other blogs blogs. The reviews were good. What genre of music do they make and are they really that bad? How does this name gets them attention?
I don't find 'Chinese Kids' or Vietnamese Kids' offensive phrasing. What's offensive about it? It's not as if that phrase alone is a standalone attack on those kids. Look, I'm all for political correctness, but when you focus so much on being so P.C., the paradox then becomes that you actually isolate them more when you focus on differences, just like that Southpark episode where they throw a parade for the nurse with the dead fetus attached to her face. Try to figure out why the concept of 'black kids' is so offensive to you, and then question why it is so.
