Hyphen editors and writers are working on two feature stories for our next issue. One is about the congressional race between two Asian Americans representing Silicon Valley.
Mike Honda has represented his Silicon Valley district and Asian Americans in Congress since 2001. The Democrat has built a record of advocating for labor, immigration, and education on the hill, and crushed his Republican opponent with 74 percent of the vote in 2012. But the largest threat to his incumbency is now coming from the ranks of his own party, as a younger challenger who is backed by Silicon Valley tech titans threatens to unseat Honda next year. Hyphen interviews Congressman Honda and his challenger, Ro Khanna, to preview the upcoming battle for the majority Asian American district.
The second story is about an Indian American magician. Indian magic is a dying art. Jadoo performer Shreeyash Palshikar revives the raw energy of disappearing Indian street magic with theatrical flair and a bit of scholarly erudition thrown in. The article explores how Palshikar’s work both reenacts and challenges the Orientalist stereotypes that came with Indian magic’s introduction to the West, taking readers from pre-colonial Indian court magic to contemporary performances for American audiences.
