Shaun Majumdar: Worst Indian Accent Ever

March 24, 2008

It is about three recently divorced guys and their also-divorced divorce lawyer – played by Rashida Jones (did you know she was Quincy Jones daughter?!?) formerly of The Office.

It was pretty bad, but there were some slightly ridiculous highlights that had the dirty Farrelly Bros taste to it. But I was confused by the character Dr. Freddy Saghal, played by Shaun Majumdar.

I couldn’t tell too much from the episode I watched, but he seems to play an immigrant from India who had an arranged marriage that went bad. First of all, Shaun is a Indo-Canadian comedian who you might recognize for his small role in the first Harold and Kumar movie as Kumar’s over-achieving older brother.

But in Unhitched, he affects possibly the worst Indian accent I’ve ever heard. Instead of sounding like any Indian in the universe, he sounds very much like Adam Sandler when he makes funny accents while singing songs. I’m not sure if that’s what’s he’s going for but then again: Why couldn’t The Farrely Bros. just have created an Indian American character who got divorced? Then they could have saved Shaun from this embarrassing predicament.

Shaun Majumder,Is a poor man's Russell Peters...he is totally unfunny and should not be on the air. His routines are really forced and uncomfortable to watch. How does this guy get gigs? I hate to speculate, but it's simply because of skin color, not talent.I think he's a regular on CBC, and does some public speaking engameents but his comedy and routines are terrible.
I couldn't agree with this assessment more. Awful.
I don't watch too much tv since my antenna only picks up 3-7 channels, but randomly I saw this show. His accent is horrible... and I don't blame him at all. My "Indian accent" is horrible too.South Asian Americans deal with arranged marriage issues too. He doesn't need to have an accent! The show would be so much more funny. And I won't even begin to rant about the way this show deals with South Asian sexuality.I really hope this show will get better... I'd love it if my antenna picked up a show I could watch without getting pissed off.
