Valentine's Day Dance-A-Thon to End Sexual Slavery

Woo your crush with that sick Jabbawockeez move you've been practicing in your room. In addition to a dance-off, there will be prizes, and food and drink specials. All funds go towards the Nomi Network, which works to eradicate modern day slavery.

Stop the Traffick: A Single's Auction

bannersomaly.jpgFifteen smokin' singles will be auctioned for themed dates. The event also includes a mixer and buffet dinner courtesy of Tia Lou's restaurant. A Valentine's Crush Party hosted by Visionshock immediately follows the auction. All proceeds benefit the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raise global awareness about human trafficking.

Sunday February 15th -- San Francisco

Grand Re-Opening of Angel Island

angelisland2.JPGThis Sunday, the U.S. Immigration Station at Angel Island will be re-opened for the first time in three years. Major restoration work to this National Historic Landmark, as well as new exhibits will be available for viewing. A Dedication Ceremony will take place from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, and will include a blessing by the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria, lion dancers, and local and international officials. If you want to attend the Ceremony, you must take the 8:45 am ferry from San Francisco or the 8:50 am ferry from Tiburon.

Public tours led by storyteller Charlie Chin, performance artist Melody Tanaka, and museum designer Daniel Quan will take place from noon to 3 pm. Event includes free admission, tram service on Angel Island, and reduced rates on ferries. Complete program here.

Tuesday February 17th -- NYC

Conversation with the Author: Yiyun Li and Brigid Hughes

vagrants.gifJoin The Vagrants author and Hemingway Foundation/PEN award winner Yiyun Li for a discussion and book signing. Li's recent novel focuses on China's struggles with democracy, and "weaves together harrowing stories of cruelty, courage, resilience, and sacrifice." Brigid Hughes, founder and former editor of the Brooklyn-based literary quarterly A Public Space, will also join the discussion.
