Students Rise to the Top of 2009 International Contemporary Furniture Fair

May 28, 2009

Amidst the $20,000 hammocks and glistening pillars of polished
furniture, I found the show's buzzpoint: a modest booth with fifteen
designs that showcased the theme "Design for a Dollar." Here, enterprising young minds from the Pratt Institute, like Sukmo Koo
(pictured above), challenged themselves to create everything from
furniture to lighting and miscellaneous products for a dollar.

Sukmo and his partner, Young Taek Oh,
used twisted egg cartons to create the organically-shaped
"Metamophosis" lighting fixture. Other student designs incorporated
string shelves, sand-blasted plates, and even crystallized pipe
cleaners for a new take on modern chandeliers,

The prize for thinking frugally (and some would say, better)? The Pratt
Institute’s Department of Industrial Design received the ICFF Editors
Award for "Best Design School."

Thanks. I just found this website.
Congratulations to the young and promising furniture creators - Sukmo Koo, Young Taek Oh of the Pratt Institute for winning the ICFF Editors Award for "Best Design School." I have seen the photos of their creations and they look classy and expensive. I wish I was able to attend the ICCF Fair so I could buy their wonderful creations. Modern day furniture makers have learned to combine functionality, good design and reasonable price to their pieces of work.
