Artists on Film: The Case of the Grinning Cat

caseofgrinningcat.jpgThe Asian American Visual Cultures Inaugural Event presents a screening of The Case of the Grinning Cat. In 2001, shortly after the attack on the World trade Center, a yellow cat stencil appeared in Paris, and continued to pop up during times of social turbulence. The film will be followed by a discussion between filmmakers and artists Prerana Reddy and Naeem Mohaiemen.

The Smithsonian Latino Center and Asian Pacific American Program present a lecture and discussion exploring the legacy of Chinese Americans in the Americas. Lok Siu, anthropology professor at NYU, will give a historical and cultural overview of Chinese migration to Panama on themes of labor, racial exclusion, gender, and new cycles of migration to other parts of the Americas. When Dreams Are Interrupted Premiere

dreamsinterrupted.jpgBay Area choreographer and Purple Moon Dance Project founder Jill Togawa collaborated with local artists (including spoken word artist Janice Mirikitani) to create the "interrupted dreams", memories, and stories of Japanese Americans incarcerated in World War II. This multimedia work was inspired by Togawa's discovery of the story of the Nakazawa family, previous owners of her home in south Berkeley. Each performance will be dedicated to various members of the Japanese American community: the Nikkei, Richard Aoki, and East Bay faith-based organizations who supported the community before, during, and after internment. Tea receptions and discussions will follow the performances.

The festival's opening night film will be Tze Chun's Children of Invention, and the centerpiece presentation  is Formosa Betrayed, by Will Tiao and Adam Kane. Boston Asian American Students Intercollegiate Conference (BAASIC)

"What's Your Power?" is the theme of this year's BAASIC, exploring issues of strength, invisibility, and changemaking within a political, social, and economic context with students from all over the Greater Boston area. BAASIC willl be hosted by Northeastern University, and will feature performances by hip-hop artists Magnetic North and Taiyo Na. Keynote speakers are longtime communtiy activist Michael Liu (author of The Snake Dance of Asian American Activism) and writer/poet Ching-In Chen (The Heart's Traffic).
