Aoki Documentary World Premiere
Aoki is a documentary film chronicling the life of Richard Aoki (1938-2009), a third-generation Japanese American who became one of the founding members of the Black Panther Party. Filmed over the last five years of Richard's life, the documentary features extensive footage and exclusive interviews with insights into his childhood in a concentration camp, serving eight years in the US military, and his contributions to the Asian American and Third World movements. Page Turner: The Asian American Literary Festival
The Asian American Writers' Workshop presents a two-day celebration that kicks off with a cocktail reception and dinner on Friday honoring Sonny Mehta, editor in chief of Knopf, and featuring Booker Prize winner Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient. Saturday is an all-day reading series with over 30 authors, including David Henry Hwang, Ed Park, Jhumpa Lahiri, Ed Lin, Jen Kwok, Amitava Kumar, and many others.
