Ronald Takaki Passes Away

May 27, 2009

Word is getting out that author and Asian American historian Ronald Takaki has passed away. Not many details but we'll keep you updated.

UPDATE: Dewey St. Germaine of the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley, confirms that Takaki passed away Tuesday. And here is UC Berkeley's press release

Takaki was a professor emeritus in ethnic studies at UC Berkeley and his Strangers From a Different Shore and A Different Mirror are mainstays in many Asian American studies and history classes. His many thousands of students over the years probably share my view that taking one of his classes was one of the best experiences I had at Berkeley.

As a current UC Berkeley student and fan of Professor Takaki's ideals/theories, I am completely saddened by his passing away. Not only was he a brilliant scholar, but a friend to communities of color. An incredibly warm and welcoming individual, Takaki was a role model for all.Rest in Peace, Takaki. We'll always remember you.
