This program and panel will explore and celebrate the lives of two Japanese American women, artist Mine Okubo and fashion designer Michi Nishiura Weglyn. Both were imprisoned in internment camps and became activists following WWII. More info here.

Visual Art Workshop with Truong Tran
Learn how to reuse, re-purpose, and re-imagine found objects with artist Truong Tran. The workshop will start at Mina Dresden Gallery, where Truong will show his work and describe his artistic process. He will then lead students on a treasure hunt through the streets and thrift stores if the Mission District.

To mark the 68th Anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 which led to the imprisonment of 120,000 Japanese Americans during WWII, The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program welcomes award-winning playwright Philip Kan Gotanda and historian Dr. Scott Kurashige to the Smithsonian. Gotanda will talk about one of his latest plays After the War, and Kurashige will discuss his debut book The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japaese Amiercans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles.More info here.

Kundiman Asian American Poetry Retreat Accepting Applications
In order to help mentor the next generation of Asian American poets, Kundiman is sponsoring its annual Poetry Retreat at Fordham University in New York City. Fellows will participate in small workshops, writing circles, and social gatherings. The 2010 faculty includes Regie Cabico, Tan Lin, and Paisley Rekdal.
