Rally to Address Attacks against Asian Americans

May 4, 2010

Just wanted to let people know about a rally at San Francisco City Hall today, May 4th, organized by members of the Asian American and African American communities in response to the recent attacks and deaths of elderly Asian Americans.

We have a nice discussion going on in Claire’s post, so keep it going there.

Speakers scheduled to address the rally include residents of the southeast neighborhoods of San Francisco where some of the attacks took place. Leaders in the Asian American and African American communities are scheduled to speak, including Vincent Pan of Chinese for Affirmative Action, Joseph Marshall of the Omega Boys Club, Lateefah Simon of the Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights and representatives from the Chinese Progressive Association. Members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors have been invited to speak about the city’s response. All speeches will be translated into Cantonese.

Here’s a Facebook event page for the Stop the Violence against Asian Asian Americans rally and a group page. The rally is from 6 pm to 8 pm.

A rally held April 27 drew more than 500, mostly Asian Americans, to City Hall. For Tuesday's event, Hyphen board member Chia-Chi Li, who has been involved in the organizing for the Stop the Violence group, said it’s been great to see the effort to get members of the Asian American and African American communities come together to address this issue.
