Hyphen's Bittersweet Issue Teaser Party Rocks L.A.

Last Saturday was Hyphen's first foray into partying SoCal style, as we hosted our first event in Los Angeles. And we must say -- it was a resounding success!

As locals celebrated the end of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, we got ready to celebrate our upcoming Bittersweet Issue, with cover star Ada Wong of NBC's The Biggest Loser. We were unsure of the response we would get in the City of Angels, but the packed house and the positive vibes made us proud to be honorary Angelenos for the night. "There are no cool Asian events like this in L.A.!" one attendee, an L.A. resident of twelve years, raved.

Held at Chop Suey Lounge in downtown L.A., our party featured a wealth of impressive musicians and performers: Beau Sia slayed us with his spoken word, SKIM rocked the house with her beats and rhymes, Sam Kang wooed us with his voice, and Dawen and Jane Lui's musical match-up sealed the deal -- their cover of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" is already the stuff of legend.

Jane Lui and Dawen entertain the crowd... and themselves!

Our DJs -- Abloon, Concise and Eri -- had us dancing all night long (you may have spotted several Hyphen staff members getting down on the dancefloor), and we loved the live art from A'misa Chiu and Yumi Sakugawa, which showcased some of the finest work that L.A.'s art-meets-club scene has to offer.

We also had some celebrities in the house, including actress Michelle Krusiec (who got jiggy on the dancefloor), comedian Ali Wong, our friends from Disgrasian, Angry Asian Man, KoreAm, 8Asians and MYX, writer/filmmaker/musician Kip Fulbeck of The Hapa Project and our Hybrid issue, and even our first issue cover star!

We had live art by A'Misa Chiu and Yumi Sakugawa.

And the massive turnout from our readers and fans blew us away. Hundreds thronged Chop Suey ready to celebrate us. People were Tweeting, calling and texting to see if they could still get into the party well into the night. Everyone was enjoying the delicious food and treats while sipping on the "Bittersweet," the house-made cocktail created especially for the event. One Angeleno, a subscriber from 2005, was thrilled that we finally held an event in L.A. … and so were we.

We are grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response we received and want to thank everyone involved, along with all of those who came out to party with us and support our publication. We couldn't do it without you! It went so well that we would love to come back.

Thank you, Los Angeles!
