Into East River(s) Project: A Bilingual Poetry Reading
In 1993, a freighter named the Golden Venture ran aground in Rockaway Queens carrying 286 people smuggled from China's Fujian Province. In the following months and years, many of the passengers were deported or detained while trying to claim political asylum. Their case and struggle became a symbol of the broken US immigration policy. Into East River(s) Project presents an evening of dialogue, dinner, and poetry with Meena Alexander, Ken Chen, Jennifer Hayashida, Andrew Hsiao, Audrea Lim, Lisa Chen, Angelina Lee, Mai Mang, and Russell C. Cold Tofu Performance
Cold Tofu returns to the Tateuchi Democracy Forum with "The Hiroshi Show". Starting with one suggestion from the audience, Cold Tofu creates a long-form improv show full of hijinks based on the personal stories of its guest hosts. This show's guest host is actor and museum volunteer Rodney Kageyama. Cold Tofu is an arts organization dedicated to promoting diverse images of APAs through comedy and developing multiethnic talent through education and performance.

Chinese Cinema Club: Perfect Life
Emily Tang's second feature Perfect Life (2009), co-produced by Jia Zhangke, tells the stories of female migrant workers in China. Two women, one fictional and one real, struggle for a new life in southern China. Their lives converge in Shenzhen, a city of dreams and survival for millions of migrant workers. Intricately blending documentary and fiction, Tang takes realism to a new level. Followed by discussion with Grady Hendrix, co-founder of New York Asian Film Festival. The Chinese Cinema Club is a collaboration between dGenerate Films and Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), and screens Chinese and Chinese American films on the first Friday of every other month. The 33rd San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival will feature 50 companies and more than 750 performers, all of whom represent diverse traditional communities living in Northern California. This year, APIA artists and companies will perform as part of a five-weekend lineup in San Francisco and Berkeley. Fifteen new works created especially for the 2011 Festival will be presented by artists including Barangay Dance Company, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Hui Tama Nui, and more. Mottainai World Environment Day
The Japanese American National Museum and Great Leap present MOTTAINAI, a fun-filled, informative day of performance, video screenings, and participatory workshops celebrating World Environment Day. "Mottainai" is a Japanese word that loosely means “it’s a shame to waste nature." The day opens and ends with “ORDER TO GO”, a performance by members of Collaboratory, Great Leap's artist mentorship program. There will also be a screening of Great Leap’s music video "B.Y.O.CHOPSTIX", about the 100 billion pairs of wooden chopsticks we throw away every year and what we can do about it. In addition there will be creative and informative workshops for young and old to offer ideas of how to change our habits. Nobuko Miyamoto will lead a new Obon song and dance to share the spirit of "mottainai" for all generations. More info here.
