Reparations and the Human
This presentation by UPenn professor David L. Eng will explore the relationship between political and psychic genealogies of reparation, and how they might supplement one another in theories of the human and discourses of human rights, while helping us to understand better the social and psychic limits of repairing war, violence, colonialism, and genocide. Eng will trace a global genealogy of reparations in order to rethink the conceptʼs transnational significance and the possibility of “racial reparation” in the context of the trans-Pacific: the internment of Japanese Americans by the U.S. government during World War II; the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ending that war; and contemporary legal claims by “comfort women,” young girls and women from Japanʼs colonial empire conscripted by the imperial army into sexual slavery.

South Asian Women's Creative Collective Literary Festival
From the Middle East to the Midwest, revolution is spreading. Women have joined radicals in solidarity, even as their own rights come under fire by conservative elements. Some of these women are able to tell their stories from Madison, Sanaa, and Tahrir Square. Others are silenced, devalued, or (in the infamous case of a Syrian blogger) invented. Fact or fiction, real or imagined, told from the inside or the outside, narratives provoke, explore, critique, and—in some cases—prevent revolution. This SAWCC Literary Fest is an exploration of the role of stories in political change. Full schedule and venues here.
