RightsFest
comes to San Francisco on October 26-28th in Japantown. The
event brings three nights of civil rights films and panel
discussions with filmmakers and activists. Each night, two films will be paired
together to bring different communities and struggles into conversation with

Slaying the Dragon: Reloaded Screening
Scholar and filmmaker Elaine Kimʼs recent documentary Slaying The Dragon: Reloaded (an update to Kim's previous film Slaying the Dragon) continues to explore Asian images in Hollywood film. The documentary takes into
account a new generation of viewers and films. A
post-screening discussion will feature director Elaine Kim; Benjamin Han,
Cinema Studies NYU; and Jeff Yang, curator of the current A/P/A Institute
exhibition Marvels & Monsters: Unmasking Asian Images in U.S. Comics,
1942-1986. The discussion will address new and persisting images
of Asians in the popular imaginary, as well as some of the complexities of
shifting archetypes and their psychological and developmental effects on Asian

"Visions of a New China" Films

The Asia Society of New York presents a documentary film series focusing on urban
life and exploring how millions of people navigate a changing China, across a spectrum of social and
economic classes. It also takes critical looks at the repercussions of China's

Four Destinies
Mu Performing Arts presents Four Destinies, written by Katie Hae Leo. The tension between free will and destiny underscores this
satire of adoption in America. Destiny Jones is a Korean adoptee raised in
Minnesota. But Destiny Jones is also an African American adoptee, a
Guatemalan-born adoptee, and an adopted Caucasian boy. Four different actors
portray the same character on the same day with the same family. To
further complicate things, a playwright named Katie Leo keeps interrupting, and
she really wants to make sure she represents every adoptee ever born, as well
as give all of her characters exactly what they want. In this exploration of fate, DNA, arrival
stories, and the families that love them, the answers are never simple. More info here.
