Cultures of Resistance: Artists on Activism

Institute asks four artists -- Suheir Hammad, Sidd Joag, Iara Lee and Paul D.
Miller (aka DJ Spooky) -- to explore the idea of being “the change they want to
see” as set forth by filmmaker Iara Lee in her film Cultures of Resistance. The
workshop, screening and discussion will provide launching points for artists,
scholars, and community to discuss artistsʼ

WORKSHOP with Sidd Joag
Artist Sidd Joag of freeDimensional will facilitate a workshop on its new
region-specific model for providing distress services to artists and culture
workers in areas of conflict. Participants will engage with the concept,
purpose, structure and outcomes of Regional Triage Teams - network activators
designed to advocate for and access resources on behalf of artists facing
political repression as a result of their activist work.

Can music and
dance be weapons of peace? In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara
Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled
in conflict and self-destruction. After several
years and travelling over five continents, Lee encountered nmany people who committed their lives to promoting change -- from
Iran to
Burma to Brazil. Cultures
of Resistance explores how art and creativity can further the battle
for peace and justice.

A post-screening panel featuring filmmaker Iara

Tisch School of the Artsʼ Art & Public Policy program chair Randy Martin.

a performance by Meiyin Wang (co-Artistic Director of Quality Meats) that unpacks China's history through the poetry
that emerges from The New York Times front-page headlines from the last
hundred years, and through the interrogation of a mother’s mundane history. Part performance, part lecture, part installation, mother land / foreign
relations reconstructs and dissolves history and personal stories, dancing

Kristina Wong's Cat Lady
"A little Ed Hardy meets Lord of the Flies meets cat pee", Cat Lady, written and created by Kristina Wong, blends the
parallel worlds of two lonely personas living at the margins of
gender and society: cat ladies and male pick-up artists. This multi-media theater piece
incorporates the psychology behind hoarding (both of animals and humans),
pick-up artist techniques, anecdotes from unmarried women who live alone with
cats, and Wong's attempts to simultaneously end racism

Water is Rising presents its American stage premiere about the vulnerable coral atolls of the Pacific Islands Kiribati,
Tokelau, and Tuvalu, and rising sea levels as a result of
global warming and climate change. 36 dancers and musicians from the world’s smallest islands express their
connection to nature and their ancestral past through multi-part harmonies,
poetry, and movement.
