Kollaboration Star 2012 features the winners from Kollaboration events across the nation to vie for the title of "Kollaboration Star."
Kollaboration SF 2012 winner Peter Chung will be competing on Kollaboration Star 2012. Peter will go up against other winners from Kollaboration events across the nation to vie for the title of "Kollaboration Star."
What's that? You missed KollabSF this year? Well, let me tell you, it was quite the spectacle....
I spent that particular sunny Saturday changing my outfit four times, looking up BART schedules, and rushing to get to UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach hall to catch Kollaboration’s flagship event, called (surprise, surprise) Kollaboration -- an Asian American talent competition (Hyphen was a media sponsor).
Other than getting the chance to watch the amazing Kollaboration finalists, why was this blogger so eager to get to the show early for the red carpet meet-and-greet?
Two words:
Ellen Kim.

Kollaboration 2012 attendees were lucky enough to see dancer and choreographer, Ellen Kim. Ms. Kim brought her exuberant personality and overall awesomeness. Born in LA, but raised in SF, Ellen Kim has been dancing for years and has a soft spot for the Bay Area. She's also an ardent supporter of the Asian American arts.
But enough about this blogger’s girl crush.
Other highlights of the evening? There were many so let me touch upon my favorite moments:
- Emcee Paul “PK” Kim’s imitation of finalist LoopKicks real life “Chun-Li thunder kick.”HOW did that girl manage to do that?!)
- KT Tatara’s hilarious jokes about growing up a hapa in the East Coast, as well as a sharing a definite “TMI” moment at a Target that left the audience in stitches.
- Jayne Rio’s Rihanna-style voice and crazy Lady Gaga shoes.
- Dustin Ako’s beatboxing and his mad skillz. With a “Z.”
- Kollaboration’s annual freestyle vocal competition, which left me with new respect for folks belting out Whitney and Adele songs.
- Freestyle dance competition and the power of Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” Enough said.
- Surprise guest performer Clara C’s general “adorable-ness” on stage.
Kollaboration has been touting its motto “empowerment through entertainment” for years, and definitely did not disappoint. Each year, they give Asian American up-and-coming amateur performers a chance to showcase their talent onstage in front of a packed, red-glow-stick-waving crowd.
And I ate up every moment.
But, seriously, HOW did that girl manage to “thunder kick” her way off the stage? Respect.
