Outsourced: A Quarterly Report

Todd’s company, Mid American Novelties, has outsourced its call center to Mumbai, India, and he, helpless at the whims of a new global economy, is sent there to run it. What ensues is a series of one-liner gaffs that traffic in ethnic stereotypes and induce the involuntary eye-rolling I thought I'd left behind in my teens. Let’s dive right in and explore some of the offending dialogue, shall we?

Beginning of the End: 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I'

Absent are the perpetual dining hall feasts, flashy Quidditch banners and plush armchairs of Gryffindor’s common room. Harry cannot return to Hogwarts, or risk arrest, persecution and death. Instead, the heroic trio travel to remote, beautiful locations while attempting to destroy remaining Horcruxes, the cursed items that contain a part of Voldemort’s corrupted soul -- and to help keep the dark lord from death.

Manny Pacquiao: Our Hero, Ourselves

The husband, the dun, and I were strolling around the new shops at Santa Monica Place two weekends ago, and the new Nike store had four displays full of the sun of my parents' flag. Right in the entrance, on a platform closed off by ropes, was a mannequin wearing his robe, his shorts, and boxing boots with the Filipino flag. And the storefront was emblazoned with Manny Pacquiao, the largest cardboard cutout of a Filipino I had ever seen.

Did I ever think this day would come?
