Managing Editor

Seeking a talented and detailed oriented person with strong writing and editorial skills for the Managing Editor position. You’ll work directly with the Editor-in-Chief and manage other senior editors to ensure that stories are regularly written and posted online.   

The Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day operations and workflow of the digital magazine. You will be involved in managing and outreaching for pitches, foster relationships with existing contacts, managing the publication calendar on an ongoing basis, and working with the editorial staff to maintain a smooth workflow. Detail orientation is a must.

  •  
    General Duties and Responsibilities: 
    • Manage the day-to-day production schedule of the magazine through assigning deadlines, managing Trello board, and publication of pieces
    • Review pitches-at-large and assign to appropriate editors and/or respond to pitches
    • Help recruit and train new editors and work closely with writers to ensure their stories align with the “Hyphen voice”
    • Review and perform edits for pieces to the Hyphen style guide
    • Write timely articles and/or pitch stories of your own
    • Perform other editorial duties as needed
    Knowledge and Skills: 
    • Google Apps
    • Microsoft Word and Excel
    • Ability to pick up new applications easily (ie: Drupal, Trello, Submittable)
    • Basic HTML skills
    • Loves workflow operations optimization and maintaining a tidy calendar
    • Deadline obsessed
    • Proven editing and professional journalism experience
    • Basic copy editing skills (Knowledge of AP Style a plus)
    • Solid experience in duties outlined above
    • Mind-blowing verbal & writing skills
    • Passion for learning and desire to support Hyphen’s growth
