Lenora
Leeʼs interdisciplinary work “Reflections,” integrates historical research,
personal narrative, and in-the-moment performative artistic processes utilizing
dance, video projection, martial arts, and Chinese lion dance. It is inspired
by stories of three generations of men in the Lee family and their peers as
they realized their identity and communities as Chinese Americans.
Lee will share insight into motivations and artistic craft embedded in this new
work through commentary, video, and live performance.

Universal Filipino Performance
Universal Filipino is a new solo hip hop theater piece written and performed by Kilusan Bautista. It premiered in 2010 at the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective, Bronx, NY. The play offers a creative and cutting edge presentation of the contemporary struggles for working class, Filipino Americans in the diaspora and the interconnectedness of hip hop culture with indigenous, tribal Filipino cultural expressions. Universal Filipino is an artistic collaboration with DJ Soulcrates, co-director Yuisa Davila, and choreographer Lia McPherson. More info here.

Hip Hop Theater Workshop with Kilusan Bautista

How can the hip hop generation reclaim its voice and use the aesthetics of hip hop culture for personal healing and cultural empowerment? Universal Filipino, written and performed by Kilusan Bautista (also a Mr. Hyphen 2010 contestant), is a solo hip hop theater production that explores the dual identity processes for Filipino Americans in a modern, multicultural racist America. An excerpt of the full production will be presented along with an in-depth discussion based on the themes of Universal Filipino. All ages and ethnicities are welcome to join. Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Jose Rizal

evening celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Filipino writer,
political activist, and Philippine national hero José Rizal begins
with a screening of the new John Sayles film Amigo. The film is set during the Philippine-American
War in 1900, as a village mayor tries to negotiate between the local
guerrillas and the American forces garrisoned in his town. A conversation with director John Sayles will follow the film. The conversation will be moderated by
poet and scholar Luis H. Francia, author of A
