Director Kayo Hatta dies

Picture Bride told the story of Japanese picture brides and Hawaiian sugar cane plantation workers in the early 1900s. It won the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Film at teh 1995 Sundance Film Festival. Hatta was 47. Her latest movie, "Fishbowl," was set to air on PBS.

Editor in Chief Harry Mok wrote about growing up on a Chinese vegetable farm for the second issue of Hyphen and has been a volunteer editor since 2004. This is a tremendous loss. I interviewed her at the SJ Fairmont when PB came out. She was super cool, funny, frank, driven and outspoken--especially about how Asians were depicted in the media.She was also extremely thankful for the press and seemed relieved to be talking to someone who "got it" rather than another white movie critic. While talking to the star of the film TT was rather trying, talking to Kayo was like talking to a cousin or aunt. Very natural and relaxed with lots of great quotes. I'll always remember that and I'm sad there won't be more.Godspeed, Kayo.
