Katrina Action Alert

If you're as angry about the government's non-response to Katrina as I am, please consider signing this petition from Moveon.org. The petition simply asks for congress to create a Katrina commission--like a 9/11 commission. And this time I think there may well be more will among the people to act upon the information gathered.

Thanks for pointing to the entirely-called-for MoveOn.org petition, Claire, and for the excellent work on the blog in general, which I've just discovered and am very much enjoying.On a Katrina-related note that might be of some interest to APA folks, I've got a brief post up on my blog Zuky regarding the controversial use of the word "refugee":
One of the sad lessons I've learned during the Katrina tragedy is that Americans regard the term "refugee" as a dirty word. Over the past week I've heard over and over again, "These people are not refugees, they are displaced American citizens." [...]

The reality is that the United States, despite being the wealthiest and most militarily powerful nation in the world, isn't nearly as exceptional as people like to think. The reality is that poverty, deprivation, and deep-seated official neglect have resulted in pockets of Third World despair in urban ghettos and rural slums across the land. Hurricane Katrina has simply torn the lid off this dirty secret, putting America's deep divisions of race and class on full display. [...]
