A Song For Ourselves New York Premiere

On the heels of a successful San Francisco Premiere, Director Tad Nakamura brings his documentary
on the legendary activist and musician Chris Ijima to the same
elementary school where Ijima taught from 1975 to 1985.. All proceeds
will go towards the Chris Ijima Fund, which supports faculty
development, innovative curriculum, and sliding scale tuition at Manhattan Country School. A director Q & A and reception will follow the screening.

Paper Angels Benefit Party

Direct Arts is throwing a party to raise funds for Genny Lim's new show Paper Angels. The show explores America's historic ambiguity towards its immigrants through the story of a group of Chinese detainees on Angel Island. The event will feature a hot item silent auction, Indonesian dance group Saung Budaya, Korean drummer Vongku Pak and DJ Jaiko Suzuki spinning garage and '60s underground. Paper Angels opens April 29th.

Belonging: Artistic Expressions of Race and Class in South Asian, Arab, and Muslim Communities

The Asian Law Caucus is hosting an art event spotlighting its work in South Asian, Arab, and Muslim working-class communities via its Taxi Project and National Security and Civil Rights Project. Photographs taken by taxi driver John Han will be on display, as well as photos by Amal Mongia of individuals detained at the border. Maneesh the Twister and Jimmy Love from the collective Surya Dub will be spinning. Sukhawat Ali Khan and company will perform qawwalis, a traditional South Asian folk music.

Kularts presents Jason Magabo Perez in a multi-media performance paying homage to childhood heroes and recounting the murder conviction of two Filipino nurses (one of whom is the artist's mother).The show will also feature CLICK by Allan S. Manalo and performed by Dennis Rodis, a twisted monologue about obsessive infatuation, Stevie Wonder, and frappuccinos, via a Manila Starbucks. More info here.
