We now know that negotiations between Pyongyang and the State Department began right after the two journalists were seized, and that North Korea specifically asked for Bill Clinton to be dispatched in a show of respect to them. Before sending the former president, the Obama administration spent time testing North Korea's sincerity to avoid a scenario in which Clinton might return empty-handed.
