SAG Awards Shows Asian Americans a Lil' Love

December 16, 2010

So the Golden Globe nominations came out, unsurprisingly, with nary an Asian or Asian American nominee in any of the major categories. But for an organization that's pitting Burlesque, Red, and The Tourist against one another in the Best Comedy or Musical field, perhaps we shouldn't take it to heart. Come on, Hollywood Foreign Press. Did Yogi Bear not make the cut-off in time?

Luckily there's a less prestigious, but more egalitarian award show coming up. The Screen Actors' Guild Awards -- based on votes by SAG members -- shows a lil' bit more love to our Asian/American brothers and sisters who have been army-crawling through the Hollywood trenches this past year. Scoff at it all you will; it's still better than a Blockbuster Entertainment Award.

It looks like Asian Americans pop up in the television Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble categories but sigh, no individual nominations. Also, Brenda Song got left out of the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture for The Social Network, teaching us all an important lesson: contrary to popular belief, playing a psycho Asian girlfriend doesn't always pay. However, Max Minghella -- of Chinese, Scottish and Italian descent but playing South Asian Harvard student Divya Narendra -- gets some props.

Good luck to the Asian/American nominees and may you get a little award bling for all the muck you wade through in the film and television industries.
