Our next installment from Asian American Sports with Rick Quan features an interview with Rex Walters, the Japanese American head coach of the University of San Francisco’s men’s basketball team. Walters was also the first Asian American to play in the NCAA Final Four, repping the University of Kansas Jayhawks in 1993. Hear him talk about growing up in San Jose playing in local Asian leagues, how his “blond Asian” kids are following in his footsteps in those leagues, and how he hopes that he played a small part in paving a way for Asian Americans in basketball.

raymond townsend, filipino american from san jose, was a member of the 1975 UCLA national championship team ... wat misaka, japanese american from utah, was a member of the 1944 and 1947 NCAA (and NIT) championship teams ... this was before term "Final Four" was coined, however ... townsend, and arguably wisaka, preceded walters as "the first asian american to play in the NCAA Final Four" ... fyi, townsend played in the nba with golden state; misaka with knicks
