Gift Guide and Raffle: RAD AND HUNGRY Office Supplies to Make You Happy

December 18, 2013

I am a bookish nerd -- a very old-fashioned one. This means that when I begin writing my masterpiece that will win me that Pulitzer, I will still use pen and paper to write my first drafts, not tablets. Or worse, my smart phone (I recoiled in horror when I first saw spoken word poets reading from their phone screen).

It should come as no surprise then, that I have a pen and notebook fetish. I’m serious. I feel that to celebrate and show the utmost respect for my writing and my craft, I must use beautiful tools that inspire. No Bic pens for me, thank you.

So imagine my delight when I came across the RAD AND HUNGRY website, which offers office supplies from all around the world that combine the kitsch and the cool. To me, these surprising objects seem to say, ‘I’m very cool to hang out with because I’m sophisticated and worldly, but instead of sporting snooty overpriced designer junk, I sport these RAD AND HUNGRY kits that have an international and quirky flair. So I’m really ironic like that.’

RAD AND HUNGRY was founded by Hen Chung in 2010 after having traveled internationally and collecting what she calls their “lo-fi” products. And like many bookish nerds, she also finds office supplies to be very, very sexy. She decided to collect everyday products from other countries and relocate them to the U.S. ”[T]o me,’ says Chung, “office supplies are an ideal way to highlight how daily diet design is transformed when out of context.”

Since pretty much all RAD AND HUNGRY products are limited-edition, they are selling out fast. Hurry and get your hands on the items below that would top any holiday wish list:

1. STMT X Mexico Kit -- $21

RAD AND HUNGRY releases new STMT X Kits monthly that include at least the basic elements you’ll need to write down your ideas when inspiration strikes, plus an additional object or two that you didn’t know you needed until you’ve gotten your hands on the kit. My favorite so far is the Mexico Kit, which consists of a vintage mechanical pencil, 100 triangle-tip paperclips, one wood Oaxacan wood letter opener, and my favorite – a cute faux-leather notebook that says “ideal” in the front (note the heart-shaped dot over the “i”).

The mechanical pencil uses 0.9mm lead, and the ideal notebook comes with 96 rules sheets and measures 4.5” x 6.5.”

2. Vintage Wearever Mechanical Pencils (from Mexico) -- $10

Don’t colorful things just put you in a smiley mood? Available in yellow, orange and green, these vintage pencils are definitely one-of-a-kind – we dare you to find them anyplace else.

Made with a plastic body with a metal pocket clip. Uses 0.5mm lead.

3. Pignasty Notepads (from Italy) -- $9

I don’t know what “pignasty” really means, but I like it! It just speaks to me. Just one suggestive word invites all sorts of interpretations, ranging from the base to even the hilarious. Perhaps it’ll be the conversation starter that finally breaks the ice between you and that cute one you’ve been eyeing.

Pignasty notebooks contain 70 sheets of cream blank pages and measure 150mm x 210mm.

4. Vintage Paper Font Stencils (from Mexico) -- $15

Craft some seriously classy labels and signs with these vintage paper font stencils. Great for making decorations to prettify your birthday, wedding, Halloween, Valentine’s, and any you-name-it event. The uses are endless!

Comes in 4 different fonts.

5. Permanent Markers (from Korea) -- $5

Ever had one of those days when you were packing for an apartment move, and then you get to your boxed collection of love letters from that ex that got away who you met during your study abroad year, but the marker that you reach for to label the box won’t write on the dang thing? Or if it does, it’s super faint and runs easily (especially if you’re left-handed)? Well say hello to RAD AND HUNGRY’s permanent markers from Korea that write big, fat, juicy letters on just about any type of surface you can think of – paper, metal and wood (yes! wood!).

6. RAH Tote Bags (from China) -- $20

Made from ripstop nylon and able to hold up to 50 pounds, these totes are perfect for hauling groceries, laundry, books, and your ex’s stuff that you’re too nice to dump in the trash. They are foldable and machine-washable, which means you can use them for, like, forever.

Available in two colors: Neon Liptastic and Goldenrod Pencil. Dimensions are 15.5”W x 25.5”H x 6”D.

7. Chunky and Funky Stapler Set (from Argentina) -- $36

Built to last a lifetime, these durable steel stapler sets come with a cute-ass stapler and a set of 1,000 staples. Break away from the dull with these vintage staplers available in matte slate gray and glossy periwinkle.

8. Magnet Butt Pencil (from Portugal) -- $4

These are probably the most unique pencils we’ve come across – one end is magnetic, which means you can stick them on your fridge (or any magnet-friendly surface)! Now you can quickly write those passive-aggressive notes to your roommates about their annoying habits -- like eating your yogurt, drinking your beer and being all-around disgusting slobs.

Comes in striped and Pollock (splattered) colors.

9. 60’s Italian Spiral-Bound Bamboo Notebooks -- $9

Don’t your most brilliant thoughts and important information deserve to be memorialized in the most stylish of notebooks? These bamboo-designed notebooks are so pretty that you’ll be inspired to generate more notes and ideas just so you can use your notebooks more often. And who wouldn’t want that?

Notebooks have graph paper pages and measure 5.875 x 8.”

10. Rad Bag (international) -- $14

Who doesn’t love a surprise? The Rad Bag would be a great way to treat yourself, and add seriously cool office supplies to liven up your desk. The bag contains 3-7 hand-selected office supplies from several countries. And you just might end up with a unique never-been-sold treasure that RAD AND HUNGRY selected just for these surprise packages.

For a chance to win some awesome RAD AND HUNGRY swag, please share this article through all your social networks. One reader will be randomly picked on Christmas day and gifted with a STMT X Kit and RAH Tote Bag. And feel free to leave comments below or in the RAD AND HUNGRY website.
