As infectious as ironic sarcasm, vegetarianism, American Apparel and sunglasses that take up half your face are to hipsters, here come Black Kids! Their four-song EP, downloadable for free off their MySpace page, has been given the highest praise on every indie music blog in existence. The Jacksonville, Florida-based kids deserve every word-their EP is a well-crafted voyage into their carefree world. Vocal melodies of siblings Reggie and Ali Youngblood flow like butter into your ears, and the alternating desperation and detachment in Reggie Youngblood's voice is enough to cut you like a (butter) knife. Note the sincerity in the line, "It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody/What's the use of pulling the shades?" in "Hurricane Jane." Black Kids might draw from a bucketful of artists, genres and sub genres, but they never rely heavily on any single one. This makes for a unique and familiar freshness. Let's hope a full length album will come as swift as their rise to indie fame. Seriously, four songs really isn't enough to hold us over.
