An Evening with Hwang Sok-Yong

hwangsmall.JPGThe recipient of Korea's highest literary prize, Hwang Sok-Yong is one of the world's most famous novelists. A dissident and former laborer, Hwang served prison time after an unsanctioned visit to North Korea, and was later pardoned by the South Korean president in 1998. Hwang recently published an autobiographical novel, The Old Garden. The Asian American Writers' Workshop, HeyKorean, The Korea Literature Translation Institute, and Seven Stories Press will host a reading and Q & A with the author.

Oct_MATCHA_small.JPGThis month's Matcha -- Asian Art Museum's interactive arts mixer -- celebrates Loi Krathong, Thailand's annual river festival of lights. Featuring classical dance and live ensemble music by the Thai Cultural Center, a puppet performance by Mandalay Marionettes Theatre (from Burma), and an opportunity to create a river offering, learn about the mythical Thai Bird people, and sample Burmese tea leaf salad. Exhibits -- such as Emerald Cities -- and a cash bar will also be open.

University of Texas Study on Ethnic Differences in Attitudes Towards Physical Activity

The ethnic composition in the US is changing and it is extremely
important that medical professionals understand the cultural differences in physical activity between women of different ethnic backgrounds.
Dr. Eun-Ok Im of the University of Texas' Ethnic Specific Midlife Womens' Attitudes Toward Physical Activity (eMAPA) is conducting a study and

Defending Asian American Voting Rights -- NYC

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) are in need of volunteer attorneys on Tuesday November 3rd to be trained on voting rights law (with CLE credits), inspecting poll sites, observing poll worker conduct, and surveying voters on Election Day.
